The Clash London Calling Tower Theater Show 3/6/1980

Hard to believe but it’s the eve of the 30th Anniversary of Clash’s London Calling Tower Theatre Show as I’m typing this blog and
scanning the negatives. All the “hipsters” that were into the New Wave
Punk scene were at this historic show which I was lucky enough to
attend and drag my camera into. Back then, it was no problem to bring
in a 35mm camera with a telephoto lens, quite apparent from all the
tight shots I took. As was the case with many of these shows I
attended, it was off to the Drexel University Triangle darkroom to
develop the prints well into the night. One of the picks with Joe
Strummer was Ian Dury who came onto the stage to jam to a song but
can’t can’t remember, possibly Janie Jones.
We miss ya Joe!

Beer with Johnny Rotten Lydon 1983 NYC

If you’re old enough to remember recording video on VHS, you might remember the white balance button. Or in my case, sometimes forget to balance the color. It was easy to forgot since the camera monitor was in black and white.
This is prized footage of meeting with John Lydonaka Johnny Rotten. The event was an art gallery opening for was for Futura 2000 in NYC 1983. My friend Ari coaxes John into saying the letters W K D U, which stands for WKDU FM 91.7 the student run radio station at Drexel University.
I have more footage of interviewing Futura and Fab 5 Freddy which I hope to post in a few weeks.

1983 Memorial Day Old City Philadelphia

I finally finished up one of the first videos I ever shot with the 2 piece RCA VCR and camera I bought in 1983. It was quite cumbersome by today’s standards and the battery life was quite short. My good friend Chris “Theo” Theodore led the interviews with some of Philly’s most colorful characters. The Sixers had just won the NBA Championship and Old City was in quite a Brotherly Love kind of mood.
Keep an eye out around the 2:40 mark for a ghost town of 300 block of Market St, years before any type of revival had started. Enjoy!

Sea Isle City 1988 Part 1

Well it’s taken 20 years but I finally started to edit the videos I shot at our summer shore house in Sea Isle City from the summer of 1988. There wasn’t much of a market for editing VHS movies for the regular consumer but thankfully, my tapes have held up for over 20 ears.
I have to say that the sales crew from Comcast was probably the greatest group I’ve ever worked with. Led by Bob Carroll and Myra Nelson, about 10 of us rented a house on the bay in Sea Isle for the summers of 1988 and 89. This footage is from around July 4th 1988 and features whatever photos I could come up with. Bob’s friend Ronny had brought down a few of his musician friends who played did an impromptu jam. I have much better footage from later on Labor Day so stay tuned!

Videoblogging Week 2008 London 1986

Let’s call premier videobloggingweek2008 video the prequel to Dover to Belgium ferry ride. My travel pal Cynthia is one crazy girl. Met her at a Philly block party around 1982, and I was impressed that she was the only black girl (African American term not yet invented by PC people) wearing a Clash shirt. We loved many of the same punk new wave bands and to this day, our favorite band of all time is XTC. Cynthia moved to California in 1987 and we still email. Cynthia, this is for you!

Philadelphia is just a few days away from Philly Beer Week, a first for this town and I must say that my beer geekiness far surpasses my tech geek. But like tech, my beer geek friends far out knowledge me in the hops, barley, Belgians, etc, etc, etc. In tribute to Philly Beer Week I offer this throwback to 1984 when beer meant ripcording Old Milwaukee or any other beer that had an old school pull tab. I’d like to thanks the stars of the video, Polka Joe Pils and Jeff aka “Fester” for slamming that beer. Thanks for checking in craicheads and crackheads!

As promised, Jimmy has a lot of good Craic tucked away in the video vaults. This is some classic footage of RUIN from the Lee Paris Benefit 1986 from Houston Hall, University of Pennsylvania. Special appearances include Dr. Dirt, Mel Taylor and Alan and Elizabeth Fiend who still kick it out with their video blog, and the late hardcore WXPN DJ Eddie Hacksaw. Sad note that the tribute web site to Lee Paris is now in a funk. He was such a big influence on the music scene in Philadelphia from 1978 to 1986. Lee Paris…Rest in Peace. Miss ya but I never really knew ya, John Coffey aka Jimmy CraicHead.

It is a bit scary to watch video from 20 years ago and have forgotten most of it except for actually having done it. Flash Craicback to 1986 when I went to visit my cousin in Mons Belgium. The trip started off in London for a weekend, accompanied by my good friend Cynthia. Big memory was going to see the Dallas Cowboys play Chicago Bears at the old Wembley Stadium. Then it was off to Belgium via a ferry on the English Channel from Dover to
Ostend Belgium. Sad to report, this ferry ride only serves freight now. It was a beautiful August day and I was lugging around old school 2 piece video equipment. I wasted a lot of battery power from train rides, then overcharged the battery the first week. No footage of the next 3 weeks in Amsterdam, Brussels, Gent, or Frankfurt. London 1986…to be continued.
