It was 9 degrees Fahrenheit in Philadelphia this morning but I bundled up as best I could and took the 10 minute trolley down to 30th Street Train Station to catch the launch of Whistle Stop Train ride for President Elect Barack Obama. Without getting into a big history lesson, this is the route that Abe Lincoln used when he went Washington to be inaugurated. The Whistle Stop was making a stop in Wilmington Delaware to pick up Vice President Elect Joe Biden.
I almost didn’t get the last minute shot which would have rendered this video useless. I did not know what to expect, it was so cold, that it drained my battery down to a flashing empty sign just as the caboose was coming up and I didn’t think of the big train pole in front of me which blocked part of Obama. But, yes was out in the rear and rang the bell when he saw our small gathering. Politics aside, let’s all hope for a great 2009!

This marks the start of my fourth year of video blogging and I decided to take a small break from shooting any of the Mummers Festivities for this year. I did go down to do Washington Ave for some site inspections and caught up with Jonny Goldstein and his lovely wife Mattie but it was bitterly cold. My real intention that day was to hit the opening of Local 44 (at 44th and Spruce St. (former Kellianns and Murphys Tavern) to sample some killer micro beers with Philly beer dorks city wide. The place opened at 5pm and was jam packed by the time I met Polka Joe there by 6pm. Slugged a couple Victory Hop Wallops and called it a night but was determined to come back 2 days later for lunch with birthday girl Samantha. This video is more of a thank you tribute to Brenndan for opening such a fine place following in the footsteps of his “Port Kensington” Memphis Street Pub and to wish Samantha a little internet birthday wish. Enjoy
